External Course Pre-Approval Form

  • This form is required of undergraduate students intending to take courses outside of AUP; it determines the equivalencies they will received when transferred back to AUP.
  • It is recommended that students have twice as many courses pre-approved than needed in order to give the student flexibility once on-site at the external institution.
  • No more than 64 transfer credits can be used towards a degree. 50% of all upper-level coursework (3000 and 4000 level courses) in the major must be completed at AUP, and no more than 8 transfer credits can be used to complete a minor. 
  • No more than 18 transfer credits are allowed post-matriculation unless completed in an AUP approved exchange program, and the final 16 credits prior to graduation must be completed at AUP.
  • Only students with a GPA of 2.5 or greater may take external courses for transfer.
  • Official, final transcripts from the external institution must be received by AUP's Registrar Office within one semester after course completion to finalize the transfer of credits.
  • Grade C is the minimum passing grade for transfer courses.
  • 3-credit EN course taken online should not be counted as a replacement for one of our 4-credit ones

  • Major Requirements, Minor Requirements, CCD1 and CCR requests must be approved by the relevant Department Chair.
    (e.g. if the request is a course required for the History major or minor, or is a CCD, or CCR type in that major or minor, the Dept. Chair of the History and Politics Dept. will approve)
  • CCD2 and CCI requests must be approved by the GLACC Committee.
  • CCE requests must be approved by the Comparative Literature and English Department Chair.
  • CCM and CCS requests must be approved by the Computer Science, Mathematics and Environmental Science Department Chair.

1 If your program of study has a CCD course option, the review will be conducted by the relevant Department Chair.
2 If your program of study does not have a CCD course option, the review will be conducted by the GLACC Committee.
(e.g. a Journalism major requires CM1500CCD, so approval for an external course seeking this equivalency will be conducted by the Communication, Media and Culture Department Chair. An Art History major does not currently have a CCD course in its program, so approval for an external course seeking this equivalency will be conducted by the GLACC Committee.)

  • Registrar Review
  • *Reviewer based on Area of Credit Application selection (see above)
  • Associate Dean Review

Note: for a course to be approved for Integrative Inquiry (CCI), it has to meet at least two of the four Learning Outcomes below:

  • Local and Global Perspectives: You will enhance your intercultural understanding of languages, cultures, and the histories of local societies, and the global issues to which these relate
